1st XI Cricket 2020

The 2020 1st XI cricket season began with our annual trip to the Willows in Rangiora, where we had a dominant win. Captain Beckham Wheeler-Greenall led the way with the bat, scoring 104*, with King’s amassing 201/7. The Willows were bowled out for 145, with Beckham, Kyle Hastie and Ben Webber taking two wickets apiece.

Our involvement in Dunedin Crickets 2nd Grade has become a chance to blood new players and prepare for the regional Gillette Cup play-offs in March. The highlight of the club competition was Jacob Gilbert’s 129 vs Kaikorai and Jackson Clearwater taking 5/18 vs John McGlashan College. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, at the time of writing we are not sure if the Gillette Cup will go ahead in 2020.

Interschools

Southland Boys’ High School: Match Drawn

King’s won the toss and decided to bowl first, dismissing SBHS for 165, with the wickets shared by all six bowlers used. Marno Potgieter was struck on the hand first ball and batted bravely for two hours with what turned out to be a broken finger! King’s played freely in the middle order and decided to make a sporting declaration at 144/8, in the hope of setting up a possible outright victory.

King’s set attacking fields and the match was well poised at the lunch break, but SBHS batted on to be bowled out for 134 with Ben Webber taking 3/18 to clean up the tail. King’s required 156 off 28 overs – no easy feat in 2-day cricket. The game meandered to a disappointingly flat finish, with King’s 125/6 at the end of the game.

Shirley Boys’ High School: Match Drawn

King’s decided to bat first and scored 288/8 dec. with Jacob Murray leading the way with 101*. It was the first interschool hundred since 2013. Oram Gutsell also chimed in with a quick 45*.

King’s bowled out SBHS before the end of day one for 168 with Louis Clydesdale (3/31), Oram (3/24) and Jacob Murray (2/23) taking the bulk of the wickets. With a lead of 120, captain Beckham Wheeler-Greenall decided to enforce the follow-on. Unfortunately, the weather intervened on day two with hardly any play due to rain. SBHS finished on 20/0 after nine overs.

Waitaki Boys’ High School: Win by an innings and 153 runs

The final interschool of the season was a trip up the motorway to Oamaru. King’s lost the toss on a green pitch and were in early trouble at 111/7. A couple of great partnerships developed with Ben Webber (34), Josh Hart (52) and Oram Gutsell (26) all contributing to get King’s to 222.

King’s then produced an outstanding bowling and fielding display to knock Waitaki over twice before the end of the first day for 33 and 36 in under 40 overs! Ryan Watterston, Beckham Wheeler-Greenall and Jackson Clearwater all took three wickets in the first innings, before Jacob Murray (4/9), Beckham (3/6) and Oram Gutsell (2/3) finished the rout! A very convincing win to King’s.

It was great to see individuals making representative sides. Jacob Gilbert, Oram Gutsell, and Jacob Murray made the Otago U17s, Ethan Booth and Beckham Wheeler-Greenall (capt) made the Otago U19s. Jacob Gilbert was the first King’s High School student to make the NZ Secondary Schools Maori side. The icing on the cake was captain Beckham Wheeler-Greenall being selected for the NZ U19 side that competed in the World Cup in South Africa. Beckham was one of the stars of the tournament, making 75* in his side’s semi-final loss to eventual winner Bangladesh. The side took a lot of pride and satisfaction in Beckham’s performance.
