This year the King’s Chess Group enjoyed a prosperous year of good play and sociable times. With the recent additions of new chess sets and gear we

were able to open up the group to a larger number of students and, after announcing almost daily access to the chess sets in the library, enjoyed

observing many pairs battling it out on a regular basis. It was good to see the boys enjoy the game and make it a social gathering rather than

simply a battle of mind power.

The 1st Team of Zac Mitchell-Beatson, Ben Scott, Andrew Smith, William Sharpf and myself had a great time hosting the Otago Boys’ team during the

Interschool despite being overwhelmed by a group of vastly skilled chess

players

2021 has been a very successful year for King’s High School Chess. As well as comfortable interschool wins against Waitaki
Boys’ and Southland Boys’ High Schools, we recorded a historic win over Otago Boys’ High School as well.
Further success came in the Otago Secondary Schools’ Chess Championship, which merged this year with the Southland
Championship. Two King’s teams were entered, who finished fourth and fifth overall, the best combined placing for any
school. Regionally, this amounted to second and third in Otago, with the A-team only one board’s win away from a spot at
the South Island Championships. With the entire team remaining at King’s next year, 2022 looks promising.
