Garry made the move from Waitaki Girls’ High School to King’s at the start of the 1987 school year. He and wife Annette had previously lived in Rangiora and after some time in Oamaru decided to move with their young family a little further south to where family lived. Garry had completed his tertiary education at the University of Otago and had graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Geography. However, his other academic interest was in Economics and it was to a position in this area that he arrived at King’s to take up the After settling in to the school he was appointed to the position of Head of Economics in 1993, followed shortly after by taking on the mantle as Head of Commerce which at that time included Accounting and Business Studies. Despite being a Geographer at heart Garry has mostly taught Economics from Years 9 to 13 during his tenure here. He has been a member of the Commerce and Economics Teachers’ Association while at King’s, as the Otago Branch has rotated around the various city and coastal schools. He has involved his students in the Young Enterprise Scheme in the past and has also involved himself in Cricket and recently Football.
It is hoped that Garry has a long and fruitful retirement and enjoys the views and peace of his home on the Otago Peninsula. He leaves having given great service to the school and its students over the past 28 years.
