To Deputy Principal

It was announced this week that Mr Darryl Paterson has been appointed the new Deputy Rector of King’s High School. Mr Paterson replaces Mr Daryl Shields who is retiring after many years at King’s. Mr Paterson has a long association with King’s High School, starting his career as a teacher here in 1997. From 2002 until 2006, Mr Paterson worked at schools in Britain, before returning to King’s in 2007.
His pride in King’s High School is obvious and infectious. He relishes the opportunity to be involved in the leadership of a school he sees as ‘the best boys’ school in the South Island’ and potentially the best in the country. He feels King’s is heading in the right direction under its current management and ‘it’s a great time’ to be here.‘The school direction is fantastic’ and he is looking forward to helping continue that with a few ‘tweaks’ here and there. One goal is to develop a better leadership programme amongst the boys, starting next year with our Yr 9’s and building on that through their years at school. Another long-term goal is to see if we can re-establish a King’s Hostel.Mr Paterson also sees achieving that balance between sporting and academic success as crucial, with King’s sport probably taking a back -seat at the moment to its academic and cultural successes. While the Deputy Rector’s job is, of course, a top priority for Mr Paterson, boys can rest assured, he will be coaching the 1st XV in 2012.

From 2016 School Magazine

Deservedly Mr Paterson has been appointed to the role of Rector at Waitaki Boys’. He will return to Oamaru and the school of his youth to restore an institution that has been struggling in recent years. He makes the move with our blessing and best wishes. The five years he has served as Deputy Rector at King’s will place him in good stead. He has distinguished himself in this role and his passion for sport is legendary. Mr Paterson has been a fixture at King’s for the best part of two decades. ln that time he has been an excellent teacher of History, a Dean and an outstanding 1st XV coach. He has given the young men of King’s his time, energy, talent and passion; nothing more could have been asked or expected of him.
