Pacific Island group aka “Kings of the Pacific”
“Kings of the Pacific” went solo this year after performing the last few years with “Queens of the Pacific” as “The Royals”. We started with 20 or so boys but only 15 managed to “survive the grind”. The group has a true Polynesian flavour this year with a mix of Tongan, Samoan, Cook Island and Maori boys who were committed to performing. In true King’s fashion we left practices late and finished our entire program the week of performing. Our performance at the Polyfest was one to remember for the boys as they made their friends, family and school proud.
A massive thank you goes to our wonderful tutors. Firstly, George Bower who taught the Fijian items, the meke (dance) and sere (song). This year was the first time we have had someone to come in and teach Fijian dance and George’s input made a huge difference to our understanding and technique. Secondly, Paulo Tupai (ex-pupil) taught the Fa’ataupati (slap dance). The boys did amazingly well learning the slap dance routine in two days. Also to Mr Mata’afa who taught the rest of the items. The boys had a great time learning the program and were always willing to help each other out when someone was struggling to keep up with the routines.
